ICA Work-Study Program

Immaculate Conception Academy, an all-girls, College Prep Catholic High School located in the Mission District in San Francisco has implemented a work-study program and is looking for organizations to sponsor their students. Currently, just to cite a few, the girls are working at companies such as GAP, Bank of the West, UCSF, Jones Day Law Firm, Heffernan Insurance Brokers, etc. Nationwide this program is already succeeding in 25 other cities coast to coast. A team of 4 students works at an organization to cover one full-time position, rotating work days.

The organization receives an entry-level, clerical staff position filled without the hassle of hiring, benefits and other HR concerns. The students are employees of the ICA Corporate Work Study Program. The organization’s sponsorship helps lower the tuition cost of their college preparatory education, making it
affordable for more working class families.

Operating as essentially a small, outsourcing staff agency, ICA enables the organization to fill needed clerical or entry-level positions. The students are on site 36 weeks a year, 40 hours a week adding diversity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and succeed. For more information please contact Sister Lilly at (415) 824 2052 ext 28 and/or visit ICA’s website at www.icacademy.org

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Since September of 2008 our St. Brendan St. Vincent DePaul Conference has been sending five volunteers help serve dinner at the MSC (Multi-Service Center) South.

The MSC (525 - 5th Street @ Bryant) is the homeless shelter where our parishioners supply sandwiches on the 4th Sunday of each month.

Our nights of service are the 1st Monday and 3rd, 4th (just added), and 5th Tuesdays of each month.

The dinner service has been a success and very much appreciated by the clients and staff at the MSC.

The time commitment is from 4:00 PM to no later than 7:30 PM.

Volunteers can either meet in the St. Brendan parking lot at 4:00 PM to car pool or meet at the site at 4:30.

Anyone in the parish would be most welcome to join our group. Commitment is strictly on an as-available basis.

Volunteers are contacted by e-mail to sign up for each date.

Please contact Tad Tassone by phone (415-609-7979) or e-mail (ttassone@ccholdings.com) if you have any questions or would like to be added to the list of St. Brendan’s volunteers.

Thank you for your continued support of our activities.

August Feasts and Celebrations

August 8 – St. Dominic (1221) Journeying through France, Dominic was alarmed by the popularity of Albigensian heretics who threatened the Church. They rejected material comforts while many Catholic preachers traveled in luxury. Dominic became an itinerant preacher like the Apostles and founded the Order of Preachers, “Dominicans.”

August 10 – St. Lawrence (258) A Roman deacon to Pope St. Sixtus, II, Lawrence grieved when Sixtus was martyred but rejoiced when it was predicted that Lawrence would be martyred a few days later. Instead of giving in to Roman demands for the Church’s material treasure, Lawrence gathered the poor and destitute and presented them as the Church’s treasure. He was martyred shortly afterwards.

August 15 - Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Declared a dogma of our faith in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, the Assumption celebrates Mary being taken up into Heaven body and soul at the end of her life.
It is a Holy Day of Obligation requiring Mass attendance.
